Why We’re Choosing to Be KidneyWise …

In 1987, I lost my father to Polycystic Kidney Disease. I was 8 years old when he passed. In 1991, I was also diagnosed with PKD. So far, I have been relatively healthy aside from some pain. It cannot be denied, however, that PKD is a life-threatening genetic disease that must be monitored very closely. There is no cure - except for transplantation. Each year, I am told that my kidney function is fine and I need to wait until it gets worse before I can be treated. The fact of the matter is that it WILL get worse...it's just a matter of when. I don't want to wait that long. I want there to be a cure NOW - so I walk. I walk because I have a husband who I want to grow old with and a little boy who I want to see grow up. I walk for the 1 in 500 people who are affected by PKD. I walk in memory of my dad, who continues to inspire me each day even though he passed 22 years ago.
